Author Jay Lake passed away on June 1st at 5:45 AM. He'd been battling cancer since April 2008. He was a fairly prolific author with many novels and short stories to his credit over his lifetime as a writer. He started publishing in 2004 and according to some research, he still has books forthcoming. In spite of the cancer, he continued writing until it got too hard to continue.
SFWA wrote a memoriam, talking about Jay's life as a published author. Jay has many fans, and on June 1st Facebook was covered with memorial posts to Jay. Memories of him were posted on personal pages. Good wishes for his family were left on his Facebook page.
Jay raised $50,000 at one point in his treatment to have his genome mapped so that it could be used to further cancer studies and help save lives in the future. He underwent alternative treatments through the NIH to see if something could be done to help with his battle. There is a movie that has been created showcasing his struggle with cancer. It's due to be released at some point this year.
Jay touched many lives with his stories. They spanned over a range of topics and worlds, showcasing the imagination of a very special man. He will be missed. A special address has been set up for people who want to donate money in Jay's memory. The address can be found on the SFWA page and in Jay's personal blog.
