I just wanted to give everyone yet another update on In Living Color; we have been rather busy these past few weeks, with one of our instructor’s friends showing up at a recent class and thinking of names for the group’s radio play. It has been great fun to see my new work come to life and take shape; actually this class is the highlight of my week, because I can just forget about the outside world and be silly and goofy with my friends for an hour.
Jean brought a surprise guest to class recently: a former clown named Margie. Margie is a longtime friend of Jean’s and was visiting from South Carolina. She explained that she had studied clowning with the Big Apple Circus and had played a character named Mugsie for many years. Despite having been retired for quite a few years, Margie proceeded to show the class a few of her old tricks. Margie is a first-rate juggler and amazed everyone with her skill. When she invited us up to give it a go, I was the only one brave enough to try. We tossed a few balls back and forth, and it was an enjoyable, but also nerve-wracking, experience. After the juggling, we went on to play our standard “magic stick” game, where players improvise different objects and the rest of the group has to figure out what the person is improvising, then we did some cute little skits (Margie and I did a skit together where we were lovers!)
Finally, we moved on to the radio play: That was hysterical, because Margie ended up taking on the role of Meryl Streep! I’m not going to give any spoilers here, except that she had everyone in stitches! I could barely get my lines out because I was laughing so hard! Anyway, everyone had a wonderful time, and it was one of the best classes we ever had!
