The 10th of Tevet is the traditional day of remembrance for victims of violence whose death dates and/or burial places are unknown. Tonight, December 16, 2010 at 7:30 PM a memorial service and rally will be held at Brooklyn's Parade Grounds (adjacent to the Tennis Center across the street from Prospect Park) to remember all victims of violence as well as the recent suicides of gay young adults.
Join Queer Rising on the eve of the 10th of Tevet, the National Remembrance Day of those who have died in violence whose names might not otherwise be remembered, for: In God’s Name: Hate is the Abomination. “Many of us are deeply concerned about the rising tide of violence against LGBTQ people, here in the United States and all over the world,” said Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum, the Senior Rabbi of Congregation Beit Simchat Torah (CBST), New York City’s synagogue for LGBTQ Jews. “As Jews, we are horrified at the anti-gay bigotry coming in the name of Judaism at many of our youth, Jewish and non-Jewish.”
Hate warps the lives of all involved: the victims and the perpetrators. In light of all the suicides by LGBTQ youth and violence done against our community, we are making explicit the connection between this violence and the hateful rhetoric made by some fringe Jewish clergy.
On December 16th, we will gather and rally inside the Parade Grounds of Prospect Park. (The Parade Ground is located at the southern end of the Park, on Coney Island Ave. between Caton and Parkside Avenues.
Speakers will include Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum of CBST; Rabbi Maurice Appelbaum of Congregation Ahavas Israel in Brooklyn; Idit Klein, Executive Director of Keshet;Stuart Appelbaum, President of Jewish Labor Committee and Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union; Jake Goodman, co-Founder of Queer Rising; and NY State politician TBA shortly. The rally will culminate with a communal recitation of the Kaddish Mourner’s Prayer, Jews and non-Jews remembering all those whose lives have been destroyed due to anti-LGBTQ violence.
Endorsing Partners of In God’s Name include: The Jerusalem Open House for Pride and Tolerance, Congregation Beit Simchat Torah – CBST, Keshet, Kolot Chayeinu/Voices of Our Lives, Storahtelling, Nehirim, Jewish Chicks Rock, The Power Online, Project ACHIEVE and Columbia University Medical Center,OUTmedia.
Members of the Jewish community are encouraged to sign the “Do Not Stand Idly By: A Jewish Community Pledge to Save Lives” pledge, created by Keshet, the national organization working for the full inclusion of GLBT Jews in Jewish life, in which Jewish individuals and organizations commit to taking a stand against anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and violence from within the Jewish community.
Additionally, people are encouraged to create video messages of welcoming as part of the “Strength Through Community Project“ created by CBST.The Tenth of Tevet is the traditional date to remember victims of violence whose death dates and/or burial places are unknown. A useful reminder of the purpose of the Fast of 10 Tevet (Asar Tevet?).
I'm not familiar with this particular fast but I approve of the sentiment.
excellent my friend
Thank you for covering our event. It was a huge success! Despite freezing temperatures and a remote location in Brooklyn (where anti-LGBT rhetoric has occurred), approximately 50 people turned out. The speakers were articulate, passionate and inspiring. Then we marched up Ocean Parkway, though the heart of the Jewish neighborhood in Flatbush, singing songs in Hebrew and English, ending withe the Jewish Mourner's Kaddish.
Excellent! Thanks for sharing the reason for the Fast of 10 Tevet.
