In Christ Realities: Free from the Law of Sin and Death pt. 3

Romans 8:2

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.

For the law (prescribed regulation) of the Holy Spirit of life [fixed positionally] in Christ Jesus has liberated me [away] from the law (prescribed regulation) of sin (missing the mark of God and not sharing in the prize of life) and death (spiritual [eternal separation from the presence God] and physical death).

What does it mean that the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has liberated me from the law of sin and death?

Picture yourself walking around with shackles on your ankles, wrists and waist. The shackles are large and heavy, with large three inch links, each a half inch thick made of solid iron. The chains are about ten feel long, and anchored to a three foot by three foot by three foot solid cube of iron. You are required to wear these shackles, chains and weight all your life. On each of the shackles is engraved the word “Sin”, and on the cube is engraved the word “Death”.

At one time, the shackles were quite small and light, barely even noticeable; however, over time, the chains and shackles grew thicker and the cube grew in size and mass. Every time you did something that was not quite perfect, they grew an imperceptible amount with each failure, each wrong thought dwelt upon, each wrong attitude given a place in your heart, and each wrong action they grew. As they grew, you eventually noticed that each link in the chain had three words engraved upon them: on one side was the word “Law”, and when you turned the link over you could read the words “Judgment” and “Guilty”.

Each sin you committed, regardless of how great or small, and regardless if it was in heart or in action, caused the size and mass of the shackles and chains to grow. Finally, one day you understand that you will never be free, and that these shackles, chains and the cube will continue to grow until the strain of it wears you out to the point of physical death. However, the chains and shackles and cube can never be removed, but are also secured to your spirit, to be worn for an eternity spent in suffering.

One day someone comes to you and tells you of a Man who was sent by God, who lived a perfect life and was indeed the Son of God become flesh. This Man went about doing good, loving and serving others, and was despised, horrendously tortured and killed because of His goodness. However, the Man did not stay dead, but on the third day came back to life and not long after was received up into heaven in front of a multitude of people.

The most interesting thing you were told is that by believing this Man did these things on your behalf, and committing your life to Him and asking His Spirit to help you live a life of love to honor Him, the Blood He shed would dissolve the shackles and chains and cube, and you would be free.

The choice is yours, and is indeed very real. When you believe in your heart that the Lord Jesus Christ has indeed be risen from the dead by the power of God, and confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus Christ, you are set free from the Law of Sin and Death; your shackles, chains and weight are gone, cleansed by the Blood of the perfect and sinless Lamb of God.

You are now free to live in the continuouos grace of God, according to the Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus. You are no longer wearing the shackles of sin with the chains of The Law declaring you to be judged guilty and dragging around the sentence of physical and spiritual death.

You are born again into the Kingdom of our Father, God Most High, and you are now adopted into His family as one of His very own children, called to walk in His love, mercy and grace. You may still miss the mark of righteousness from time to time, but you are never re-shackled because the love and grace of God shed abroad in your heart causes you to turn your eyes away from your sin, and to pursue an ever more pure and holy relationship with our Father, through our Lord Jesus Christ. You no longer struggle against the weight of sin, law, judgment and death. You no longer rely upon your power to pull along your death sentence by the strength and might of your own will, but you now rely upon the graceful gift of Holy Spirit filling your life and heart with the love of God, ever encouraging, ever comforting, ever strengthening and ever leading you to the love of your Father. No more chains, no more weight and no more sin; only the love God has for you shed abroad in your heart so that you grow ever closer to and ever more like Him.

Yes, one day this tainted body will wear out and die; but then you will be freed in your own spiritual body to enjoy a life spent with our Father, dwelling in His perfect love for eternity.

Remember, when you are set free by our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God, you are truly free, indeed.
