In this digital age, as technology grows and improves, it seems as if the art of building and maintaining relationships has become obsolete.
Healthy, supportive relationships have been known to help people be more successful and live longer, healthier lives, but this is a learned skill that is being taught and modeled less and less these days. The excuses have been ' I don't have time' , ' I don't have the money', ' I don't have the energy' to nurture the relationships of those around me OR maybe you have resolved to 'nurturing' your relationships via text, FaceBook and other digital tools. While these tools do make life more convenient and they do help us to easily connect with distant friends and family - it does not take the place of real, intimate relationships.
Take a few minutes to watch the quick video below by Jim Fannin that will show you how you can take 90 seconds to strengthen the relationships of those close to you and to also illustrate how in those same 90 seconds you can be destroying those relationships.
Here are some other things you can do to strengthen your friendships and improve your life.
- Send a handwritten letter to a loved one (even if they live in the same household)
- Create unbreakable date nights, game nights, and family nights with those you love
- When you are engaging in conversation with a loved one, disconnect from the digital world (don't answer the phone, texts or emails)
- Share a journal with a child or spouse (this can turn into a interesting book project)
- Be spontaneous...Increase the 'just because' moments
