Improve the CORE of your golf swing

As the weather improves and links unthaw or dry out, depending on your location, more and more people are setting tee times. But we are all familiar with that soreness that comes with the first few rounds and the loss of distance from the time off (we will use any excuse, right). If you want improvement in your distance and head speed control it begins in your core. Like so many other daily and weekend activities your core strength makes it all easier.

First lets define what the core is. It is not your six-pack or keg in some cases. Those small, frontal abdominal muscles are designed to protect your organs and have little to do with stabilization or power/strength/stability. The core is the cylinder of muscles from your nipples to your hips. Like I always told my clients from your nips to your hips and all the way around. Thinking about the core as more than the vanity muscles in the front will not only help you feel more solid and grounded, improve your clubhead speed, but it will also free you to do fun exercises instead of boring crunches all day long.

Core strength for power: Choose between 10-50 reps, repeat 2-5 times

  • Russian Twist (Keep your head, shoulders, and eyes locked and twist at the waist. Don't swing your arms around.)
  • Single leg bicycle (Do one side then then other)
  • Woodchops with plate or dumbbell or cable chops
  • Burpees (You thought I would give you a workout without them?)
  • Side crunches

Add these five motions to your regular routine and you will start to feel and see the results quickly. Your daily activities will become easier, you will feel more connected and solid when you walk or run. I can't promise this will improve your golf game but it will increase your distance into the trees.
