Ezra Klein summed up the situation in the Washington Post today. The President wants a clean bill and the House won’t give it to him. Actually, the House of Representatives would likely give it to him but Speaker Boehner is blocking the vote.
That is why Speaker Boehner who is supposed to preside over the entire chamber with integrity and leadership has lost it. He needs to move on. But, taking the time to replace him isn’t in the cards. So, it is up to We the People to yell louder and to demand a vote.
It is not only the Tea Party that is an impediment to government today, it is the Speaker himself who has created a blockade against essential legislation to keep the government moving and to pay its obligations.
The damage to the nation, and to the GOP mounts daily. One thing that Boehner had right, this is not a joke or a game.
“Treasury Secretary Jack Lew on ending the crisis: "[Republicans] need to open the government. They need to fund our ability to pay our bills. And then we're open to negotiation."
This, in three quotes, is why we might actually breach the debt limit. The White House and Boehner continue to have mutually exclusive positions. Boehner says he won't pass a clean debt-ceiling increase and the White House says they won't sign anything but a clean debt-ceiling increase.”
