On Tuesday, President Barack Obama will unveil his views on immigration reform. Such legislation has long been overdue as it provides the framework and resources for securing America's border, establishing an employment verification system, and facilitating migrant labor for the agricultural sector.
Politically, however, the Democrats are crushing Republicans on this issue. Democrats are pushing for reform simply to improve their chances of re-election. They'll ensure continuing political clout by adding a massive number of disqualified voters (illegals) to their rolls. To engineer electoral wins in the future, Democrats need a friendlier, and less hostile, electorate.
While America is a nation of immigrants, 57 percent of Americans oppose granting amnesty to illegals. Supporting legal immigration does not have to mean allowing others to ignore the rules.
My family immigrated to the United States from the Philippines in the 1980's. Years later, my brother (who served as a combatant in the Army), sister, and myself earned our U.S. citizenship. We followed the law and earned our right to vote. Like millions of legal migrants, we waited in line. We obeyed the requirements. We respected America's laws.
People should not be allowed to jump in front of the line. That's wrong and highly unfair to migrant hopefuls who want their own shot to live the American Dream. It seems political leaders these days are advocating immigration reform (i.e., amnesty program) simply for political gain.
How can one honorably pursue the American Dream by breaking America's laws? That would be like a man pursuing the woman he admires by constantly lying to her.
Indeed, Barack Obama's/Barry Soetoro's version of immigration reform is just amnesty program. Citizens should let their voice be heard to counter Obama's propaganda machine that is the mainstream media. Tell your local reporter that it's not "reform". It's a bailout. It's a "Get Out of Jail" card.
Amnesty is not about improving America's welfare but rather about winning the 2014 mid-term elections, the 2016 presidential elections, and beyond. And that's the great tragedy of the leadership vacuum which now exists in Washington D.C. You have elected officials who are playing with people's lives as if it's a game of poker.
The U.S. Senate's blueprint calls for a pathway to citizenship for the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants living in America. The media should label Obama's proposals as amnesty and not as a "pathway to citizenship".
Amnesty amounts to government bureaucrats rewarding folks for doing the wrong thing. It's similar to bailing out Wall Street with taxpayers' money after bankers caused a financial catastrophe in the housing market.
Amnesty is a gigantic pardon awarded to millions. While a pardon only implies forgiveness, granting citizenship to illegals would also provide financial awards for breaking the law - similar to the hundreds of billions of dollars that Wall Street received from the government after bankers gambled on the financial markets.
Amnesty will confer trillions of dollars worth of future government benefits to millions of illegals. Genuine reform should never reward people who break the law. Where's the common sense in D.C.?
While most conservatives embrace legal immigration, many reject amnesty. Republicans should not cave on this issue or they will lose the faith of law-abiding citizens who depend on the party to represent their interests. Standing up for principles means knowing right from wrong.
America became great by attracting the best and brightest from around the world. If Republicans avoid this issue, Democrats and the media will attack conservatives as being "anti-immigrants".
Thomas Jefferson said, "a nation without borders is not a nation." Genuine immigration reform will secure our borders, improve the nation's employment processes, and strengthen America's farmland. It would also provide resources to ensure that Americans are protected from external threats such as drug violence and human traffickers.
Amnesty discredits such efforts. Foreign nationals will continue to break the nation's immigration laws because they will see America as weak on enforcement. Weakness invites outlaws. They will know that there will be no serious repercussions for crossing the border illegally since Barack Obama and his fellow Democrats will grant illegals with a "Get Out of Jail" card, as well as, an "Enjoy Federal Benefits for Free" card. So long as they vote blue, they'll be rewarded.
Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid would love nothing more than to convert millions of illegals currently ineligible to vote into rabid political supporters. Amnesty will result in a perpetual Democrat-controlled congress and the White House.
Those who oppose progressives will be labeled as racists, anti-women, homophobic, and anti-immigrant. By granting citizenship to 11 million illegals - most of whom will vote for Democrats, conservatives will have hastened their party's permanent demise.
