Immigration Minister suggests stripping citizenship of terrorists

The dual-national citizen who was involved in the 2012 attack on Israelis has stirred a commotion in Canada as Immigration Minister Jason Kenney is proposing that all dual-national Canadians who are involved in acts of terrorism should have their Canadian status revoked, The Canadian Press reported.

Kenney says that the government should “consider” adding his proposal to Conservative MP Davinder Shory C-425 bill, which will alter the Citizenship Act by speeding up the citizenship process for permanent residents who serve in the Canadian Forces and will reject Canadian Citizenship to all those who have committed acts of war against the Canadian Forces.

“I think that perhaps we should consider working with Shory to broaden the scope of his bill to include not just acts of war against Canada by Canadian citizens, but perhaps we should also consider acts of terrorism,” Kenney told CBC News.

Kenney also added that individuals who are involved in terrorist acts have clearly rejected all loyalty to Canada and their Canadian citizenship should be revoked.

However, NDP MP Peter Julian believes that Kenney’s approach to this issue is not one which many Canadians would take.

“We want to make sure that terrorism is stopped. But when we want to do that, it's within the framework of a democratic society where there's a system of checks and balances,” he told CBC News.

As well, interim Liberal Leader Bob Rae believes Kenney has not put much thought into his proposal.

“This is something that has to be thought through consistently. Do we want to have two or three different kinds of citizens?” Rae said after his caucus meeting.

“What are the consequences of doing that? Is it constitutional? These are things a minister of the Crown should be thinking of before he comes to a scrum and announces some kind of, frankly, knee-jerk response,” he said.

The Canadian dual-national was involved in the July 18 Hezbollah bombing of a bus filled with Israelis. The bombing killed five Israelis and their Bulgarian bus driver.
