Immaculate Conception defeats Northern Highlands

Immaculate Conception defeated Northern Highlands, 44-42, in high school girls' basketball. This was the most anticipated game of the day at the Hoops 4 Autism tournament hosted by River Dell High School on December 22, 2013.

Northern Highlands led at the end of the first quarter, 7-3. Senior starting point guard Madison Dunbar cannot be stopped! Her speed is unmatched and she can use screens to hit long range three-pointers. She finished with 19 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals, and 1 assist.

Immaculate Conception's Samantha Fuehring contributed in every way possible. She worked for rebounds, scored from both the inside and outside, looked to include teammates, and helped to bring the ball up against the press. She had 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 blocked shot, 1 steal, and 16 points.

Northern Highlands led at the half. Melissa Heath and Caroline Lovisolo worked hard inside to secure rebounds. Together, they had 10 rebounds. Heath also had 2 steals, 2 blocked shots, 3 assists, and 2 points. Lovisolo also had 1 blocked shot, 1 assist, and 8 points.

With 6:30 left in the third quarter, starting sophomore post player Jasmine Gee tied up the game when she secured an offensive rebound and scored, 16-16. At 5:08, starting freshman guard, Khay'la Latimer, hit a foul shot to give IC their first lead in the game, 17-16. Latimer stepped up big for the Blue Wolves in this game. She worked to swing the ball to teammates and hit a few crucial outside shots that her team desperately needed. She had 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 9 points.

Northern Highlands worked to get the lead back, 20-17. With 2:30 left in the third quarter, IC's starting freshman guard, Breyanna Bellerand, hit a three pointer to tie the game back up, 20-20.

In the third quarter IC went on a run and led at the end, 31-22.

Northern Highlands was not done yet. Dunbar's and Rachel Jubelt's quick aggressive defensive play forced IC to turn over the ball. NH fought their way back into the game and trailed only be three points with 3:07 remaining, 40-37.

With under a minute to go, IC led 44-39. They lost control of the ball and Madison Dunbar secured it. With :30 seconds remaining she hit a 3 pointer, cutting IC's lead by 2 points, 44-42. IC came down the court and turned over the ball. Northern Highlands brought it back, but was unable to penetrate the defense. With :10.2 seconds they called a time out. They set up an inbound play that got Madison Dunbar the ball in the corner, but IC's lock down defender Breyanna Bellerand was right on top of her and stole the ball with :0.6 seconds remaining.

Players who contributed big off the bench for IC: Autumn Webster with 5 points and 1 rebound. Paige Frankel with 1 blocked shot and 1 steal. She also had 4 points, all of which came from the foul line in the fourth quarter with the game on the line.
