Immaculate Conception Academy rallies to defeat Harker

The Immaculate Conception Academy (ICA) Spartans got off to a slow start but warmed up in time to rally past the visiting Harker Eagles (San Jose, CA) 44-40 in a West Bay Athletic League (WBAL) game at Immaculate Conception Friday evening.

The Spartans came out sluggishly on offense against the Eagles zone defense. The Eagles took advantage as they jumped to leads of 7-0 and 12-2 in the first quarter. Spartan coach Nicole Dinas experimented with different lineups and defenses before settling on a full court press that changed the tone of the game. With the press, the Spartans were able to force some Eagles turnovers and generate some offense. That allowed the Spartans to trim their deficit to 25-19 at halftime.

The second half was a battle of wills. Both teams went on runs throughout but it looked like the Eagles would pull away as they held a 37-32 lead with about 3 minutes left. However the Spartans had one last gasp as they tied and later took a 41-40 lead with about a minute left. Free throws at the end would account for the final score.

Win the win, the Spartans improved to 1-1 (7-4 overall) in WBAL play. The Eagles dropped to 1-2 (5-8 overall). The Spartans will travel to Sunnyvale to play King's Academy next Friday night (1/24) at 6 PM. The Eagles next game will also be against King's Academy next Tuesday night (1/21) at 6 PM.
