‘Imitation of Life’ star Juanita Moore passes away

Actress Juanita Moore who earned an Oscar nomination for her heart-breaking performance in the 1959 tear-jerker “Imitation of Life” has passed. The Hollywood Reporter reports Moore died Wednesday, Jan. 1 in her Los Angeles home at the age of 99.

She delighted audiences with her unforgettable role in “Imitation of Life” as a mother shunned by her child who passes for white. The L.A. native became the fifth African-American to be nominated for an Academy Award with her best supporting actress nod. In the drama Moore and Lana Turner star as single mothers raising young daughters played by Susan Kohner and Sandra Dee.

In addition to films Moore was active in theater with roles in “The Amen Corner” and “A Raisin in The Sun”. She was a member of the Cambridge Players with fellow actresses Esther Rolle and Helen Martin.

She went on to make guest appearances on television shows and star in the films “Abby” from 1974 and the 2000 Disney movie “The Kid”.
