The IMAX theater in Providence has the best seats in the house when it comes to movies, especially 3D and this month they debuted The Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation “Countdown to Flames of Hope” The 41 minute feature is helping kick off this year’s Flames of Hope: A Celebration of Life™ The Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation’s annual three-day event begins Friday and promotes breast cancer awareness and education and also honors people living with breast cancer.
Now in its eighth year, the event has blossomed into one of the largest of its kind in the Northeast—drawing more than 100,000 people to Downtown Providence’s Station Park.
The 41-minute feature provides viewers with a sneak peak into what to expect at the upcoming Flames of Hope event in addition to a behind-the-scenes access to what it takes to organize the tremendous three-day event. The upbeat “Countdown to Flames of Hope” includes spoofs and mini adaptations of well-known films such as Star Wars and TV programs like the Brady Bunch.
Maria Gemma, Executive Director of the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation, tells this Examiner she is pleased with the reaction from the audience at the IMAX showing. “We’re happy that our Flames of Hope event has so much meaning to so many people year after year. Based on all of the applause and laughter from the crowd at IMAX in addition to the feedback we have been receiving since the showing, we’re pleased that it was such a big hit.”
“Our IMAX feature is meant to get people excited for this year’s event and recognize our community partners, and we’re delighted that the mission was accomplished,” added Gemma. “Rhode Island was one of the first to light its State House in pink to raise awareness, so the entire state should be proud.”
“Countdown to Flames of Hope” was produced by Jai Consulting Group, a Providence-based company that serves as the communication and development partner to the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation.
“We decided to experiment with a different direction and tone with this latest IMAX project,” said Joseph Phommasith, founder and managing director of Jai Consulting Group, who added that the creative process of the short film was an enjoyable collaborative effort. “Given the magnitude and impact of Flames of Hope, we wanted to take full advantage of the monstrous IMAX screen that is 9 by 10 stories in dimension with a promotional presentation that echoes the energy of the three-day event.”
Breast cancer is a serious disease in Rhode Island, a state where it is the most commonly diagnosed and second deadliest form of cancer among women. One out of every six Rhode Island women will be diagnosed with the disease during her lifetime.
The Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation, established in 2004, works to promote breast health awareness and education, provide free programs and services, and raise early breast cancer detection levels in all 39 town and cities in Rhode Island, as well as parts of Massachusetts and Connecticut.
