Imagine: John Lennon adorns coin after winning vote in UK

John Lennon is the winner out of thousands of votes in the UK Royal Mint's "Great Briton" competition. The former Beatle beat out such competition as  Jane Austen, Douglas Bader, Sir Walter Raleigh, Emmeline Pankhurst and John Logie Baird.

The vote had been running for several months. (We wrote about the contest in July here.) You can purchase the coin in various configurations at the Royal Mint website.

Maybe he would've hated it, but I'm glad to see him being honored in his homeland. I personally would like to know where to get one!

Kris: The Royal Mint website has them, though they aren't 5 pounds, for some reason. There's a link in that first story.

My problem with the coin is it looks very little like him...sort of...well maybe not...it must be hard to mint someones likeness. At least they got his glass's and hair right...anybody know what it's worth in US dollars.

They're denomination is £5, but like most collectables issued by mints, they cost more than face value. The silver in them is probably worth more than £5 as well.

Story says "you can purchase the coin in various configurations at the Royal Mint website." I only see one configuration. Am I missing something?
