Images of Us Sports ("IOU Sports") debuted their One-on-One video interview series with the first woman in Wisconsin to own a professional sports team, Sue Black of the Milwaukee Wave. The fundraising event was held on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013 at Alverno College. Rhonda Ware, Executive Director at Alverno's Research Center for Women and Girls, conducted the interview; and Bernell Hooker, Founder and CEO of IOU Sports, was the night's emcee. At the end of the program, the floor was opened to audience questions.
Below is a follow up interview with Hooker about the One-on-One video series.
Ife Blount: Why did you choose Sue Black as your first guest for the One-on-One series?
Bernell Hooker: When I started to develop the One-on-One program, it was divine intervention that led us to Sue Black. It was April of 2013 when it was announced that she became the CEO and President of the Milwaukee Wave. A few days later, she was named owner. It was a no brainer. 'Herstory' was being made and everything was aligned for her to be our first guest.
IB: What do you hope to accomplish with the One-on-One series?
BH: First, I must say the One-on-One started out on our website as a blog introducing women who are in the business of sports. It was through this concept that we took the One-on-One live to give women who are national and community leaders a venue to speak candidly about their life, aspirations, and accomplishments. What we hope to accomplish is to open the eyes of young girls and women who have aspirations of working in the sports field, give them the opportunity to ask questions and to see role models. There is a need for girls to see the business side of sport so that dreams are made possible by one day owning a sports team, becoming a sports agent, or becoming the architect of a sports arena. Our mission is to 'empower girls to achieve their best through sports.' With a forum such as One-on-One, we are fulfilling our mission to empower girls by educating them about what our present and future looks like.
The One-on-One with Black will be posted in video format on the IOU Sports website in the upcoming weeks.
