It was a packed scene on Friday afternoon inside of the Mayweather Boxing Club in Las Vegas, Nevada. Several professional and amateur talents alike were honing their skills for the respective battles that lay ahead for them.
WBA featherweight champion Celestino Caballero was in the building and engaged in one of his last days at the gym as he sparred with amateur Lanell Bellows. Caballero is trained by Jeff Mayweather and the two men will be making their way to Kanagawa, Japan on Monday, as Caballero is set to defend his title against hometown favorite Satoshi Hosono on the 31st.
Former title contender Andre Dirrell was seen engaging in some spirited sparring with fellow super middleweight James McGirt Jr.. Dirrell returns from a 21-month ring layoff when he faces off with Detroit’s Darryl Cunningham on December 30th at the Morongo Casino Resort and Spa in Cabazon, California.
Always a staple in the gym, outspoken trainer Roger Mayweather could be found working with bantamweight prospect Alexis Santiago, amateur standout Anthony Simms Jr., and recently-turned pro Kyron Butler.
Even former champion Iran Barkley made an appearance, as he was in the area for this past week’s festivities at the 49th annual WBC Convention at the Mandalay Bay.
The gym was as packed as I have seen it for quite some time.
