Illusionist's Gambit is one of the newest "Magic: The Gathering" cards spoiled today Oct. 16, 2013 in an article by Eric Levine on ChannelFireball.com. Illusionist's Gambit is a rare blue instant from "Commander (2013 Edition)" that can be used to transform an assault on you to another player instead.
Illusionist's Gambit - 2UU
Cast Illusionist's Gambit only during the declare blockers step on an opponent's turn.
Remove all attacking creatures from combat and untap them. After this phase, there is an additional combat phase. Each of those creatures attacks that combat if able. They can't attack you or a planeswalker you control that combat.
Illusionist's Gambit is more than just a blue Fog or Maze of Ith affect. Illusionist's Gambit can save you from an opponent's alpha strike by removing all their creatures from combat and forcing them to attack a different person. If the conditions are right, a properly played Illusionist's Gambit could result in one or more of your rivals being killed. The original player who attacked you may also be left vulnerable to you and/or other people left in the game.
Illusionist's Gambit isn't always that fantastic. Paying four mana to stop just one attacker isn't going to do a whole lot, and even if they attack with their entire team there's nothing stopping your opponent from making all of their creatures attacking one of your opponent's planeswalkers that's on the battlefield and not them directly.
One excellent combo Levine points out is to pair Illusionist's Gambit with Elite Arcanist so that you can cast it multiple times in a game. You'll want to make sure your Elite Arcanist is wearing some Swiftfoot Boots or another piece of equipment that gives it shroud or hexproof.
How will you use Illusionist's Gambit?
