Illinois State Rail Plan February public meetings

The Illinois State Rail Plan public meetings will be held in February 2012 to introduce the study, seek input regarding issues, collect information on the public’s vision for rail in the state, and identify priorities that will affect rail transportation service and demand over the next two or three decades.

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has scheduled a series of ten public information meetings to gain public input on the current and future passenger and freight rail needs within the entire state of Illinois.  Illinois has a comprehensive rail network consisting of approximately 9,982 miles of railroad tracks.  A total of forty-one (41) railroads currently operate in Illinois, seven are freight (Class I) carriers and 34 are regional, local, switching and terminal railroads.

Public information meetings will be held at key points during the project development phase to engage the public.  With the purpose of gathering the public’s thoughts and concerns regarding the information presented.  Questions raised by meeting participants will be answered immediately or addressed in subsequent meetings, letters or other communication mechanisms.  Comments received at the public meetings will be documented, and the information will be considered as a part of the analysis and evaluation of the project.
