Illinois Railway Museum offers affordable fun for the entire family

As the school year winds down, thoughts of upcoming vacation are surely running through your head. If you are like many families, finances will dictate where you go--and where you don't go--this summer.

Fortunately for you, there are many affordable family activities that you can do close to home this summer.

Take a trip to the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, Illinois and spend the day learning about trains and riding the rails.

Located at 7000 Olson Road in Union, Illinois, the IRM is home to trains and trolleys from all periods of time. In addition to being able to tour the trains, you and your family can also take a ride as well.

The train schedule is as follows:

Electric Cars:

Sundays 4/4-10/31

Saturdays 5/1-10/30

Weekdays Memorial Day through Labor Day

Diesel Trains:

Saturday and Sunday 5/1-10/3

Also run on Memorial Day, July 5th, and Labor Day

Museum hours and ticket prices:

Weekends: Grounds are open 9am to 6pm, Museums open 10:30 to 5:00p,

Weekdays: Grounds open 10am to 5pm. Museums 11am to 4pm

Ticket Information:

Weekday admission: Adults $8.00, Children $4.00, The max family cost $25.00 (you will not have to pay more than the max family charge)

Weekends in April and October; Adults $10.00, Children $7.00, The max family cost is $38.00

Weekends May-September: Adults $12.00, Children $8.00, Max family cost $45.00
