Illinois man used sword to beat and sexually assault a woman

A man was arrested last Thursday in River Forest, outside of Chicago, for sexually assaulting a woman with a sword.

River Forest police arrested Kenneth Merrills, 20, without incident following a phone call from his 43-year-old victim. The woman, whose name was not disclosed, escaped from her home and called the police.

During the calls, she stated she had been beaten and sexually assaulted. She informed police Merrills was still in her home and had the sword used to violate her.

Police arrived within minutes and took Merrills into police custody. Merrills was charged with felony sexual assault and unlawful detention. Merrills was held on $15,000 bond for this case. He was held without bond for violating probation for a previous offense.

Merrills is due back in court on March 21.

The victim was treated at a nearby hospital for sexual assault and non-fatal injuries. She was later released.
