Yesterday, Gov. Quinn signed into law Senate Bill 957, which allows the Secretary of State to issue temporary driver's licenses to applicants who have resided in Illinois for more than a year, but who are not eligible for a Social Security number. Therefore, granting an estimated 250,000 illegal foreign motorist the temporary right and privilege of driving on Illinois roads.
In order for the illegal foreigner to receive a temporary license an applicant must pass a driving safety test and carry auto insurance. The temporary drivers license cannot be used as official identification and can be revoked if they license holder is found not carrying insurance.
The new law, that is highly praised by illegal immigrant advocates, our State legislation, as well as, Cook County and City of Chicago lawmakers believe that this will improve road safety and if half of the estimated 250,000 unlicensed illegal foreigners are properly licensed and insured, it could save Illinois insurance policyholders an estimated $46 million a year in premiums.
