Example of illegal street drifting in Tampa, Florida USA
There are too many variables that are dangerous when illegally street drifting. The reason street drifting on public roads is dangerous is because during a drift the driver has minimal control. There is a reasonable amount of control, but you must plan your route and then follow through. If something causes your route to be interrupted, it is extremely difficult to avoid collision. Drifting is accomplished by manipulating inertia and the vehicles approach angle. Inertia isn't something easily changed, and therefore it becomes dangerous on public areas. Drifting for competition is more common in North America, but illegal street drifting still exists.
