On Friday, police in Albuquerque arrested Elijah Fernandez, 19, after he reportedly physically assaulted and raped his girlfriend's 4-month-old daughter.
The baby's grandmother's boyfriend called 911 and reported that the child was not breathing, according to court documents.
The child, whose face was covered in bruises, was immediately transported to a local hospital.
Fernandez, who was supposed to be babysitting, initially told police that the infant had simply fallen off the bed.
KOB 4 reported:
That baby, because of the trauma to her body was rushed to the hospital right away and a full investigation was launched," Officer Simon Drobik said. "I literally cannot explain to you what happened because it is so graphic you will not be able to air the charges."
Police say Fernandez later admitted to slapping her because she was crying. A sexual assault nurse examiner evaluated the infant and found that more had happened.
Fernandez has been charged with child abuse resulting in great bodily harm and aggravated criminal sexual penetration. He is currently being held at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center on an ICE hold.
The baby suffered severe brain damage and has been placed on life support.
The infant's mother may also face charges in this case, according to police.
