On Monday, police in Bridgeton arrested Pascual Juan-Matias, 45, after he reportedly spent the last two years molesting a little girl, beginning when she was only 6-years-old.
Police were called to a public school within the city, after the girl confided in a teacher about the repeated abuse.
Jaun-Matias is apparently the victim's uncle, and had regular access to the child, according to court documents.
Bridgeton Police Lt. James Battavio, told The Daily Journal:
These cases are especially disturbing because the victim and accused tend to know each other, as was the case with this incident. I urge parents to be aware of what is going on with their children and to not take anything for granted. If something seems to be wrong, they need to be aware of it and take steps to protect the child. In this case the parents did that, and even though it does not take away what happened in the past to the child, the child is now safe and the family can start the rebuilding process."
Jaun-Matias has been charged with Police aggravated sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child. He is currently being held at the Cumberland County Jail on an ICE detainer.
