Massillon, OH – On Monday, Victor Velasquez was arraigned in Massillon Municipal Court on charges stemming from a collision on Friday morning with a Massillon City School District bus. The proceeding was delayed because Velasquez speaks only Spanish and required an interpreter.
According to court documents, Velasquez slammed his minivan into the back of a school bus at the intersection of Eighth Street SW and Tremont Avenue. He fled the scene on foot and was captured a short time later.
At the time of the crash, the bus was stopped while waiting for a passenger. There were eight Washing High School students on board, none were injured, said Massillon City Schools Director of Security Chuck Maier.
An open container of alcohol was found in Velasquez’ vehicle and he refused to take a breathalyzer test when apprehended.
Velasquez has been charged with tampering with records, operating a vehicle while impaired, leaving the scene of an accident, no valid driver’s license and following too closely.
At the time of his arrest, Velasquez present officers with a fake Ohio driver’s license that identified him as David Rex Diaz, according to police.
Velasquez has been identified as an illegal alien from Guatemala and is currently being held in the Stark County Jail on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer.
