So many countries, so many customs. So many countries, so many cultures. Namely from country to country not only ethnical background but also cultures and philosophy are different.
The San Francisco Bay Area or Silicon Valley around the city of San Jose is a melting pot having a variety of ethnical backgrounds and various races. We can find people who come from all over the world mainly from Asia, Europe and Latin America.
Needless to say, the environment surrounding local residents in this area is quite unique and we seldom find this kind of environment in the rest of the world. Take language for instance, it is not difficult at all to find people who speak foreign language in addition to English. Also regarding cuisine, we have a variety of cuisines from all over the world. Therefore while living in the San Francisco Bay Area, people can experience a variety of cultures, languages and cuisines as well.
Take floral art for instance, although the majority of people learn American or European style of floral arranging, some people would like to learn Japanese traditional floral art called Ikebana that is a little bit different in the way of arranging, tools used for decorations and also the type of fresh materials for arrangements.
Historically Ikebana arrangement was made mainly at temples by Buddhism priests and monks. Namely when it comes to Japanese traditional floral art, flower designers were priests and monks and arrangement was done at temples to decorate Buddhist alters of temples. Later on, Ikebana became popular among Samurai families and high society. During the age of 18th century, Ikebana spread among many of decent families.
Learning Ikebana meant learning not only floral art but also manners and etiquettes that should be formed by young ladies before they get married. Namely earning skill of Ikebana and also manner and etiquettes through lessons of Ikebana was so important and it was considered a required subject just like the skill of cooking.
In this sense, the concept of learning Ikebana is similar to learning manners of Japanese traditional tea ceremony. As mentioned above Ikebana was done in the daily life of high society like the world of priests, samurai (warriors) and aristocracy as well as well educated and loaded people. Therefore the manner and etiquettes earned from Ikebana lesson was highly evaluated and considered mandatory things women should learn earn before marriage.
Nowadays it looks like the concept about manners and etiquettes they learn from Ikebana arrangement may be considered less important than before.
