IKEA: Well worth the drive

Although it probably could not be described as a tourist destination, people do drive from faraway places to visit an IKEA store. The closest store to Indianapolis is in West Chester, Ohio, just north of Cincinnati.

It's enormous, and there's no other place quite like it. The West Chester store is so big that it's on a street called IKEA Way.

IKEA is a Swedish chain of stores that sell furniture you assemble yourself - often using a la carte components for a custom design. The furniture at IKEA is nothing fancy - in fact it is deliberately simplistic, but durable. Even more importantly, it's both affordable and practical for small living or office quarters. IKEA is so focused in on small spaces that the West Chester store even has its own tiny (but complete) apartment furnished entirely with items sold in the store. You'll be amazed at how much utility they squeeze out of such little square footage and such a small budget.

When you visit IKEA, bring your truck, van, SUV or hatchback, because you will need to haul large boxes back to your home. Although the store offers delivery, this can get expensive if you don't live in close proximity. And if you're serious about purchasing some furniture, you should also plan ahead by viewing the online catalog and even taking room measurements. There's nothing worse than traveling long distances and coming back empty-handed.
