IhsAn Bilal, a classically trained singer/songwriter, has received rave reviews for her sophomore album TEAL.
IhsAn is a dynamic vocalist who has opened for luminaries such as Faith Evans, Miguel, Jadakiss and Kanye West. She has performed at prestigious venues like the Howard Theatre, National Capitol and Grammy Recording Academy. And she has sung the National Anthem before both NBA and WNBA games.
IhsAn's talent and tenacity paid off when she was awarded the first House Studio Artist Grant. I recently had the pleasure of talking to IhsAn about her musical accomplishments, her new album TEAL, and her plans for the future.
ST: Let everyone know who you are, and where you're from.
IB: I am IhsAn Bilal: singer, songwriter, music and film producer. Born in Moreno Valley, California - raised in Washington DC.
ST: How did you become interested in music?
IB: My parents are from Gary, Indiana. My dad was also a musician, and he was in a band with some of Michael Jackson's cousins. Music runs through my veins. At a very young age I was exposed to some of the best musicians/artists in the business.
ST: How old were you when you realized you could pursue music as a career?
IB: I can never remember a time that I felt that I wasn't born to be an artist. Since the age of 6 I told myself that this is what I want to do and I'm doing it.
ST: What musicians inspired you to perform?
ST: Do you feel you have evolved from Big Red Box to TEAL?
IB: Absolutely, I have definitely evolved both personally and professionally from my first album to my sophomore album. TEAL is an acronym for Time Evolution and Love. The evolution was effortless because I've learned to know myself better, love "me" more, and (love) those around me. It takes time, but you can get there.
ST: What impact has your relationship with House Studio had on your career?
IB: I recently won the first House Studio DC Artist Grant. I recorded my album TEAL there. They are doing so many amazing things in the community. I am proud to be a part of their movement. I was awarded a full recording, promotional, marketing, and visual package grant. I am truly thankful.
ST: What plans do you have for the rest of the year?
IB: I will be on tour promoting TEAL. I'm very proud of the the work I've done - it's already being considered for a grammy nomination. I will also be recording, performing at various colleges, writing for other artists and continuing on my musical journey.
ST: Thank you for your time with this interview. Before you go, give me your website address and the social media roll call.
