Igloo or tree house?

I recently met a retired science educator at a lecture about travel to Antartica.  Not surprisingly, as an educator, she is now intrigued with eco-tourism and has begun investing in a line of portable lodging.  As an interior designer, my interest was perked when she stated this type of lodging is gaining popularity and is competing with 5 star hotel lodging in Europe and other travel destination spots.

One approach to non-invasive lodging would be to replicate indigineous structures.  The other approach is to supply portable and low-impact structures.  The geodesic dome provides the igloo model; self contained, portable and self sufficient.  Of course there is also the igloo structure constructed from snow or ice.  I will re-visit that topic under the heading "ice hotels".  In Patagonia, the eco tourism igloo is offered with organic luxury bedding and a wood burning stove.  A supplemental main lodge provides communal dining.

Similarly, the tube hotel is popping up in several locales.  Making use of recycled drainage pipes, these units provide a secure place to rest while bath houses and dining are located coummunally nearby.

An alternative approach, which is a bit more imposing on the landscape, is the tree hotel.  Recently opened in Sweden, this hotel is made up of various units from a suspended cube whose mirrored skin reflects the treetops around it to another unit which looks like an overgrown birds nest.  The rooms do feature eco-friendly plumbing and activities at the resort are limited to respect the environment.

Sustainable design is entering our lives in many ways and we have many opportunities to support these initiatives.  I hope to get an opportunity to bring sensitive design to these environmentally sensitive structures.
