Somewhat of a meme, the “bucket list” has weaved its way into popular culture, so much so that two of Hollywood’s heaviest hitters, Nicholson and Freeman, starred in a movie with the phrase’s namesake a few years back. One the youth front, MTV’s similarly themed “The Buried Life” is branded with the tagline “What Do You Want To Do Before You Die?”
If one believes that it is important to craft a list of noteworthy things to accomplish before the pallbearers hoist the brass, then certainly adding celluloid to the roll should be strongly considered. Given the vast amount of films that are present in the universe, how is one to narrow the choices, and thereby make efficient use of the precious seconds that ever fade into oblivion? It is a valid question and one that is answered by the book, "1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die".
The Independent Filmmakers Coalition of Kansas City (IFCKC) has taken up the mantle of assisting those so inclined to view the cinema options mentioned in the book as part of its ‘1001’, which asks the question “How well do you know the most influential films of all time?" The event will feature one film from the book every other month, which will be screened at the KC Metro eatery Nica's 320 located in the Crossroads District. A special “themed” menu is part of the night’s occasion.
Taking place on February 16, 2012, the inaugural kickoff will screen the first film in the series, “Groundhog Day”, starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell. Suggested donations are $5 at the door. The “themed” menu and spirits are not included in the price. The hosts of ‘1001’ are Dustin Adair, screenwriter and board member of the IFCKC and John Coovert, noted film critic from the web site LostInReviews.com.
For more information about the ‘1001’ and how the event can be added to one’s “bucket list”, contact Dustin Adair at volunteer@ifckc.com.
