One who loves wine and who lives in a high-rise condo downtown undoubtedly knows a unique vocabulary germane to such places as Stuttgart; Champagne; Tuscany, all places striving to be known as the world’s best wine country in the world.
While those locals have been striving to build the better grape for centuries, California has been meeting with much success for many years now in the wine competitions of world class wines. Even those with the largest wine word wizardry admit California is a place you ought to be if you want to rub elbows with the best sommeliers around.
Here’s something you may not know, unless your wine palate is substantial and you live in Southern California. San Diego County and Temecula are gaining a serious toe hold in the world of wine snobbery.
Nancy and I counted no less than 60 wineries between Temecula and Little Italy, all with award winning vintages for your tasting pleasure http://ramonavalleywineregion.com/. Here’s the deal: I never found my palate gravitating toward wines in general let alone the fine wines of the world. One can cultivate the taste buds so as to join the club of wine experts but why do that?
At least three times in my life, I discovered fabulous wines and like hearing a virtuoso, you know immediately that this is something special. There is no need to debate the issue; this wine is just plain great! Then when you find out that there may never be that same set of variables to yield such a great wine in the future you must choose, either to never taste the nectar of the Gods again because it is something that you will covet without fulfillment, or you must expand your palate and search endlessly for another rare bottle so that the hunt in itself may provide the fuel for your wine pursuits.
What I’ve discovered is that vineyards are beautiful as a rule, and when you visit their tasting rooms, the views are spectacular. The drives to those vineyards are nearly always pleasurable from an “out for a Sunday drive” point of view. And if you pack a picnic lunch or dinner, it turns out to be an inexpensive way to spend a day with your partner.
Try San Diego’s fruit of the vines and enjoy America’s finest. Try it. You’ll like it.
