Robin Williams breezed into town last Thursday for a one night appearance at The Lyric Opera House.
Yeah, took me by surprise too, although the theater lobby looked pretty packed more than an hour before the show. I happened to stop by an open back door hoping to make personal contact with their media liaison, but promptly came face to face with a strategically placed security guard.
If I'd known I was breathing the same air as Robin Williams, I might not have been nearly as compliant. But already running late for a different program, I just followed the guard's directions, barely interested in discussing the headliner or anything about the impending performance.
That is until I found out it was baggy pants Robin. Can't remember exactly the way I found out, but my inner stalker definitely stood up at attention.
Willams didn't need pre-show publicity to whip up an audience. A skeptical Trouble Inceptor essentially said as much as he gently led me back outside. According to the Inceptor, The Lyric doesn't allow pre-show media access to the talent unless ticket sales are sluggish. In this case, the early lobby crowd signaled little chance of any face time with Williams.
So, taking that information to its next logical conclusion, any news story about an upcoming Lyric Opera House performance pretty much indicates tickets remain available for purchase (do your patriotic duty by testing this theory and reporting back here).
I later did an exhaustive search for articles and found nothing about Williams' Thursday night stopover. Did anyone out there see his show at The Lyric? Did his Weapons of Self Destruction tour play well here in town?
Better yet, if the show transpired without anyone blogging and/or memorializing it as a YouTube video, did it actually happen? Scary to think this article may be the only link to that reality.

Actually no pre-show publicity was needed. I have an alert set up for Robin Williams with ticketmaster and about 3 MONTHS ago got an alert as to when tickets would go onsale (on a Saturday morning at 10 a.m.). I got online at 10:10 and the entire orchestra seating was sold out as well as all the better balcony seating. So, in one respect I'm glad there wasn't a lot about the event because tickets were pretty well sold out unless you wanted to pay $$$ prices on ebay or stubhub. I did see one TV ad for it about a week after the tickets first went on sale. Bottom line--it was already a sellout. As usual, Baltimore gave little/no coverage to an event like this.
