If fat-shaming is wrong, why is fit-shaming accepted?

When Maria Kang asked 24 real women to pose in swimming suits to share their stories and weight loss results, she never thought it would be turned into a fit-shaming mess. According to Maria Kang on Dec. 31, 2013, the women in the 2014 No Excuses moms’ calendar went from excited about the 2014 calendar to ashamed in a matter of hours.

The story of the 2014 calendar was featured on Yahoo Shine, and some of the comments on the page were downright mean. The calendar features 24 women, plus Maria Kang, who have all worked very hard to change their body and reclaim their health. What is not deserved is hatred and mean spirited words directed towards them.

One has to wonder, if fat-shaming is wrong, why are so many so quick to fit-shame? Additionally, Maria’s mantra ‘No excuses” is simply saying, “If I can do it, so can you”. Her intentions and heart is in the right place. If her message gets to you so badly, you feel the need to demean the women brave enough to bear all in a swimming suit for the nation to see, perhaps Maria Kang’s message was meant for you, and possibly you should listen to her.

How many of you would pose in your swimming suit, allowing it to be sold all over the world? What are you excuses for fit-shaming?
