The 69th annual Golden Globe Awards took place on January 15, 2012, at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. Here is what this Golden Globe winner said backstage in the Golden Globe Awards press room.
Best Actor in a TV Series, Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television
How does it feel to win this Golden Globe Award?
How does it feel? It feels fantastic! Second nomination, I’m having a great time being here. I love the Golden Globes because they are fun. I love “Luther” because it’s my return to television from “The Wire.” And the fact that we’re being recognized all over the world, and we’ve won with this, is very, very dear to me.
Is it true you were approached about playing James Bond?
There was a huge rumor, once Daniel Craig finishes playing Bond that they were looking for someone different. And my name was in that mix. And I answered a bunch of questions. The bottom line is of course I’d be honored to play the part if ti comes my way. So there it is.
Is there anybody you’d like to meet tonight?
I met Leonardo [DiCaprio] tonight, whom I’ve never met before. Other than that, no. I know everyone. I’m the man! No, I’m joking. I’m joking.
Was it difficult to get people to see you in a different way after playing such an iconic character (Stringer Bell) in “The Wire”?
A lot of people, especially those in this room, they don’t know my name. They know Stringer Bell, but they don’t know my name. But it’s a great character and a great legacy to continue. My name is Idris, of course, not Stringer Bell, but I love the fact that people remember that character because it was great. Absolutely.
