Cherokee Gun Club in Gainesville, Georgia held its monthly International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) match on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2011. This month’s match was the IDPA Classifier. The match began at 12:30PM and finished by 4:30PM. There were 81 competitors who used handguns from all 5 equipment Divisions of IDPA.
The high scorers by Division were:
· Custom Defensive Pistol –Ted Pesta - 103.44
· Enhanced Service Pistol – John MacDonald - 114.04
· Stock Service Pistol – Claude Werner - 89.77
· Enhanced Service Revolver – Ken Murano - 141.98
· Stock Service Revolver – Noah Teal - 136.73
The IDPA Classifier consists of 3 stages of 30 rounds each for a total of 90 rounds. Stage 1 is shot at 7 yards, Stage 2 at 10 yards, and Stage 3 at 20 yards. Stage 2 incorporates shooting on the move and turning to face the targets. Stage 3 requires the shooter to fire from behind a barricade and kneeling from behind a low barrier. Movement from the barricade to the low barrier is also required.
Stages are scored by what is called “Limited Vickers,” meaning that only a specified number of shots may be fired. This is also known as a “standard exercise,” meaning that the competitor’s actions are specified and deviations are not permitted. The results of each shot are scored as well as the time taken to fire them. A formula for missed shots and other penalties is applied to arrive at a final time for score.
The results of the Classifier are used to determine which Class in a particular Division a competitor will be scored in during IDPA matches. There are 5 Divisions, based on equipment, in IDPA and members can be classified in each Division and hold a different classification for each. Competitors are only scored against other competitors in the same Class and Division. Different skill levels are scored separately, somewhat similar to the handicapping system in the game of golf.
Cherokee Gun Club IDPA holds matches each month on the 1st Sunday of the month. Signup begins at 11 AM and closes at 12:15PM. Shooting begins at 12:30PM. The public is invited to watch or participate. First time IDPA shooters should arrive and register by 11:30 to allow for a new shooter orientation and safety briefing.
