Ideas for chewing puppies

Even small guys can make a big mess

Every dog goes through it; every owner dreads it... the horrible chewing phase.

It doesn't matter if you have Yorkies or Rotti's- chewing puppies make a mess of everything within teeth-reach.

There are many teething toys out there for pups of all sizes. Pet Supermarket, on Nicholasville Road, offers Nylabones, Puppy Teething Keys, Chilly Bones, and Cool Teething Sticks. These are all great chewing alternatives to, say, your coffee table or piano.

If you're looking for something less expensive than a new chew toy, try a couple of these ideas-

For smaller sized puppies, try freezing baby carrots; for larger sized babies, try freezing regular sized carrots. You can also freeze apple slices. As a special treat, dice up apples, pears, peaches, blueberries and strawberries, and freeze the mixture. Give your pup some of this to chew on. It will not only feel good on his teeth, but it will be good for his health.

Different breeds grow out of their chewing phases at different ages. It will generally take larger breeds longer to outgrow chewing since it takes them longer to mature. So do not fret if your little one is in this phase. As the saying goes: This, too, shall pass. And it will. You can work during this phase to guide your dog and let them know that the behavior is not desired, and give them alternative objects to chew on. Though they will eventually grow out of wanting to chew on everything in sight, you still need to let them know what they can and cannot chew on. A lot of bad habits can get started in this phase if you're not careful.
