The icy river teen body of a 16-year-old girl has been recovered by crews searching for her on Friday in South Dakota. The girl, Madison Leigh Wallace, willingly jumped into the river in an attempt to save her 6-year-old brother who had somehow either willingly jumped into the water, fell in, or possibly was pushed in.
Crews are still searching for a man in his late twenties, who went into the water in an attempt to save Madison but has since disappeared.
Sioux Falls Fire Rescue Chief Jim Sideras said the recovery crews are still battling the elements, which are not cooperating in their effort to find the missing.
Sideras also said he’s been in touch with Madison’s father, who as expected, is in a state of utter shock and sadness.
“Our prayers are with them, we want to help them cope as best they can,” he said, according to Argus Leader.
Madison was a sophomore at her high school entitled Vermillion High School. As usual with horrific tragedies such as this, school officials are providing students with guidance counselors and grief counselors that they can talk to and try to share their thoughts with.
