Iconic Fashion Designer Lilly Pulitzer died peacefully today in her Palm Beach home surrounded by family and loved ones according to her Facebook page. The cause of death is still unknown.
Pulitzer , 81, was known for her signature tropical print dresses that she created in the 1960s. She started her company “Lilly Pulitzer” by accident. Born Lilly McKim she married wealthy newspaper heir Peter Pulitzer and she needed something to keep her busy as a housewife in Palm Beach. She opened a juice stand and soon found the need for something comfortable to wear that would camouflage the stains she would get on her clothes when squeezing fruit.
The result was a brightly printed dress she could wear every day, everywhere. Not only was the dress practical, it quickly became the iconic style of a fun-loving lifestyle... and The Classic Lilly Shift dress was born. Lilly’s dresses have been worn by the likes of Jacqueline Kennedy, who attended boarding school with her.
According to USA Today, Pulitzer was also known for hosting parties barefoot at her Palm Beach home.
Lilly Pulitzer had already retired from the day-to-day operations of the company that has her name since 1993 but she remained a consultant for the brand.
