Spenger’s Fish Grotto, the iconic seafood restaurant on Fourth Street in Berkeley, is showcasing Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.’s best beers for a special Hawaiian-flavored dinner event on January 20. The five-course feast will match South Sea-styled seafood delicacies with Sierra Nevada’s most well-liked brews, resulting in an unlikely but likeable luau at the famed East Bay eatery.
“I really enjoy showcasing local beer for these dinners,” says Devon Boisen, executive chef for Spenger’s. “We have such an amazing local craft brew scene, and one of the biggest and baddest is Sierra Nevada. They seem to stay true to their roots and they are always coming up with new and interesting things for us hop-heads. I've never had a Sierra Nevada beer that I haven't enjoyed. They also make it very easy for a great pairing dinner because of the depth of their roster.”
Dubbed ‘One Fermented Evening,’ the unique feast will begin at 7pm and is a wallet-friendly $40.00 prix fixe. The menu has just been announced, though you should be forewarned that reading it may cause serious hunger pangs:
- Spice Crusted Kona Kampachi, with Ginger & Garlic Confit and Basil Broth (amuse; paired with Kellerweis – Hefeweisen);
- Ti Leaf Smoked Duck with Crisy Taro and Daikon Slaw Li Hing Vingaigrette (paired with Pale Ale);
- Hawaiian Prawn Shiu Mai with Charred Melon and Coconut Curry Soup (paired with Glissade – Blonde Bock);
- Sweet and Sticky Liliko’i Ribs with Guava Barbecue (paired with Porter); and
- Banana and Candied Macadamia Nut Pancakes with Pineapple Compote (paired with Torpedo – IPA).
Spenger’s has been around for over a century, and not only serves quality seafood but has a very cool nautical décor that showcases an endless array of authentic seafaring memorabilia and photographs. If you’ve yet to experience this popular Berkeley establishment, ‘One Fermented Evening’ might be a tempting time to give it a try.
