Icing Smiles – Escape and positive memories for families in need

See also

Icing Smiles is a nonprofit organization that provides custom celebration cakes and other treats to families impacted by the critical illness of a child. Icing Smiles understands that the simple things, like a cake, are luxuries to a family battling illness. Their goal is to create a custom cake for the ill child, or their sibling, that provides a temporary escape from worry and creates a positive memory during a difficult time.

Icing Smiles is a national organization with its roots in Baltimore. It is here in Baltimore this year’s cocktail fundraiser, the Buttercream Ball –Winter Wonderland, will take place on February 8 at 7 p.m. at the Great Room at Historic Savage Mill – live entertainment, dancing, sweet and savory edibles, amazing sugar art along with a silent auction. Tickets are $75 each and can be purchased here.

I have my own personal memory of a special cake. I was five years old and had just spent 3 weeks in the hospital with my arm in traction after being hit by a car. It was an unusual break at the shoulder. After the three weeks in traction, my whole upper torso was in a cast over the left shoulder with my arm projected out with a post holding it out in place. I remember finally coming home from the hospital and seeing the welcome home cake, it had little edible silver balls (dragees) on it. It was so good to be home and what a lasting memory of the cake.

You can help create memories for these children and their families in a couple ways:

  1. Become a “Sugar Angel” and bake the cakes
  2. Become a State Sponsor
  3. Donate

More about Icing Smiles

On January 27, 2010, they delivered Icing Smiles first cake to Violet, a beautiful 6-year-old battling brain cancer. They had one "Sugar Angel" volunteer and long-term dreams that one day we would be able to extend our reach to serve any deserving child worldwide.

Just six months later, a feature in The Pink Cake Box’s blog propelled them forward to national exposure and offers from hundreds of volunteers. The outpouring of support from our local communities and the baking industry enables them to spread Smiles throughout the world. The passion for the cause continues to grow, as shown by the numbers below:

  • 4900+ = Sugar Angels in the United States
  • 3800+ = Smiles delivered
  • 400+ = Volunteer hours per week donated to create Smiles
  • 12+ = Countries waiting to create Smiles
  • 52+ = New cake requests per week
  • 36+ = New volunteers per week
