Iceland porn ban designed to protect children from online, print pornography

An Iceland porn ban is being proposed to protect Icelandic children from the harsh realities of online and print pornography. This new measure was proposed by Interior Minister Ogmundur Jonasson. According to a Feb. 25, 2013 report by The Huffington Post, it isn't the availability of pornography that inspired the Iceland porn ban, it's the quality of the porn itself, which frequently contains violent or hardcore images.

"When a 12-year-old types `porn' into Google, he or she is not going to find photos of naked women out on a country field, but very hardcore and brutal violence," Halla Gunnarsdottir, political adviser to the interior minister, explained. Perhaps an education initiative to teach 12-year-old children not to type "porn" into Google is in order.

Although an Iceland porn ban is already on the books, the law failed to define pornography, making the existing ban difficult, if not impossible, to enforce. Government officials hope this new measure will not only clarify the material that they wish to ban but also make the law enforceable.
