The Binghamton Senators chance at revenge against the St. John’s IceCaps went by the boards Sunday, as they dropped their second straight on the weekend at Mile One Centre, by the score of 6-3. Sunday’s loss came on the heels of a 4-3 setback on Saturday night.
Unfortunately, Binghamton was forced to come from behind early Sunday and they never recovered. Rob Klinkhammer picked up a tripping call 4:05 into the game and it took only 1:09 for Jason Jaffrey to score his second goal in as many games and give the IceCaps a 1-0 lead.
Binghamton got a chance moments later when St. John’s goaltender David Aebischer was caught out of position and actually had his back to the play. Binghamton couldn’t take advantage, hitting a post.
The IceCaps gave the B-Sens a golden opportunity 8:36 in when Zach Redmond Kenndal McArdle picked up simultaneous penalties. Redmond went off for interference while McArdle was tagged for kneeing.
The end result was a full two minutes of 5-on-3 time and it didn’t take long for the B-Sens to take advantage. Josh Godfrey, who was originally thought to be a scratch, obviously was anything but. He beat Aebischer, tying things up 1-1, just 12 seconds into the two-man advantage. Mike Hoffman and Corey Locke got the assists. Binghamton could not convert on the remaining 1:48 of power-play time.
The B-Sens had another man-up chance less than three minutes later, but came up empty. St. John’s on the other hand, got another power-play chance just over four minutes later, when Eric Gryba was called for slashing at 15:24.
Jason King, who scored the game-winner Saturday night, redirected a Ben Maxwell shot past McKenna to make it 2-1.
The home team would get a late 5-on-3 power-play, with Gryba and David Dziurzynski picking up a slash and a delay of game call 15 seconds apart. The period would end without a goal, but the IceCaps carried 1:08 of the power-play into the second period. They also held a 9-8 lead in shots.
The tough luck weekend continued for Binghamton, as the second period got underway. Gryba had the puck on his stick and was looking to clear and kill some penalty time. Instead, he whirled and hit teammate Mike Bartlett in the helmet. Spencer Machacek picked the puck up and found Jaffrey, who put it past McKenna to make it 3-1, 50 seconds into the period.
Lady luck continued to smile on the IceCaps as they got another goal off the stick of Ben Maxwell, who took a tough angle shot that banged off the skate of McKenna and over the goal line, making it 4-1.
Jaffrey’s first bid for the hat-trick came up just short, as he found the goal post late in the second. The IceCaps held a commanding three goal lead and a 23-18 advantage in shots at the end of 40 minutes.
St. John’s struck again early in the third Carl Klingberg tallied 2:51 into the third, making it a 5-1 contest. That would bring McKenna’s night to an end, as he was relieved by Robin Lehner.
The change sparked the B-Sens offense as Jack Downing and Derek Grant scored 47 seconds apart, making it 5-3. Klinkhammer assisted on Downing’s goal. It was his 16th point in 18 games and his fourth in succession. Godfrey assisted on the Grant tally, giving him a two-point day.
The momentum didn’t last long as Maxwell scored his second of the day 59 seconds later, making it 6-3 with 9:28 left in the contest.
That would be the way things would conclude, as Binghamton fell to 0-3-1 in their last four games.
Binghamton (20-27-2-1) was outshot 15-7 in the third and 38-25 overall. They finished 1-for-6 on the power-play, while St. John’s went 3-for-6.

Maxwell and Jaffrey finished with two goals each and Maxwell added an assist. Jason DeSantis had two helpers.
The B-Sens return home Friday night to take on the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at 7:05 PM.
