Dave Torrey Arena – St. Cloud, MN – The Icebreakers picked up a Central Lakes Conference win on Tuesday night 6-2 over the Flying Warriors form Brainerd/Little Falls. The win improved their record to 6-4-1 in the conference and 10-11-3 overall. For Brainerd the loss dropped their season record to 3-19 and 3-7 in the conference.
Both of these young teams were looking for something positive to take into next week’s Section 8AA tournament. Coach Mark Chamernick of the Icebreakers told me he has four seniors with the bench made up of mostly sophomores and freshmen.
On the other side Flying Warrior’s coach Stephanie Sustercich has three seniors with a sophomore and a freshman starting and eighth grader Maddie Ellingson on the bench.
The Saint Cloud team dominated in the first period outshooting Brainerd 9-4 and getting goals from senior Maggie Kippley and sophomore Tatum Peterson to take a 2-0 lead into the break.
Brainerd picked up their play in the second period actually outshooting the Icebreakers with freshman C.J. Kendall scoring a goal 2:41into the period. However goals by juniors Zayda Ewing and Cecilia Strong gave Saint Cloud a 4-1 lead going into the third period.
Play was very even in the third period and again Brainerd/Little Falls struck first on a goal by senior Zoe Wolhart. But, Saint Cloud again finished the scoring with two goals in the period, one by freshman Samantha Eisenreich and the last one by sophomore Mackenzie Feeny.
Senior goalie Jodi Bertrand of Brainerd/Little Falls finished with 14 saves and took the loss. Winning goalie junior Lucy Gaetz recorded 15 saves for Saint Cloud.
Both teams will finish the regular season Thursday night and then wait for Monday’s seeding to see who they will play in the section tournament. The teams at the top of the section are closely packed and Thursday’s play will also determine who the number one seed will be.
