Get your boots on and grab your ice fishing pole because the derby is about to begin.
The Sixth Annual Ice Fishing Derby will be held this Saturday, February 13 at Independence Lake Park in Whitmore Lake. Each year since its inception the Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commission has sponsored this competitive fishing event. The other sponsors are Dick's Sporting Goods and Rick's Bait Shop.
There are two divisions: adult and kids 12 and under. For the adults there is an $8 entrance fee and the kids have a $4 fee. The fee includes a lunch of hot dogs, chips and a soft drink.
The derby has prizes and a raffle. The prizes are split up into two types of fish caught: Northern Pike and Pan fish. There is a $150 gift card given in the adult division for 1st place Northern Pike and $100 and $50 gift cards for 1st and 2nd place Pan fish. The kids division has prizes of a $25 gift card for 1st place Northern Pike and $20 and $10 for 1st/2nd place Pan fish.
The Parks and Recreation Commission says participants should bring their own bait. The commission says alcohol, ATVs or snowmobiles are not permitted.
The derby is a great way to compete for prizes while doing an activity you might be doing anyways this weekend. Registration begins at 7 a.m. on Saturday morning. The competition ends at 5 p.m. For more information call (734) 449-4437. Independence Lake is located at 3200 Jennings Road in Whitemore Lake.
