Ice build-up on roadway leads to a deadly school bus vs car collision in Northern Mississippi

One person was killed Tuesday morning when a bus from the Holly Springs Municipal Separate School System in Northern Mississippi was involved in a head on collision with a car.

One adult and four children were in the car.  Officials said one of the children in the car, nine-year-old Roddrick Isom, was killed, and the other occupants suffered injuries.

None of the students on the bus were injured.  The school children were transferred to another bus and taken to school.

The car reportedly hit a a thick layer of ice on Mississippi Highway 7, just after 730 am CST, causing the car to slide into the path of the school bus.

According to neighbors, the ice was there because of a water main leak that has not been fixed for months.

Much of the state continues to experience hard freeze conditions.  Low temperatures Tuesday morning dropped into the  teens across much of the state.  Any moisture on roads and or bridges would freeze instantly leading to hazardous travel.

Shortly after the accident, utility crews were at the scene working on the leak.
