What is artistic photography say opposed to other photography? Pondering that is along the road to contemplating Ian Delaney Doherty’s artistic photographic images and figuring where he fits in America’s showcase.
This is a sincere undertaking because sorting the wheat from the chaff is a monumental task in the visual age with so many digital images bombarding our senses all of the time and from so many directions. A guy who uses a camera everyday to support story interpretation and illustration doesn’t consider himself an artist photographer as much as a literal recorder of events.
Making photography art is when the artist like Ian commands the technology to produce images and to create impressions that are beyond human senses to otherwise visualize and see.
The Museum of Modern Art began collecting photographs in the 1930s and today they have 25,000 in their collection. A funny thing happens when “new media” are introduced into the world, “The medium is the message,” as Marshall McLuhan observed.
Ian Delaney Doherty is using social media and has embedded into the local art community where his work is becoming more recognizable as artistic assets. His work has appeared in familiar places such as the Arlington Public Library Central, but what is most interesting is how he is employing websites and a published book to share and merchandise his images.
Protecting intellectual property is an enormous challenge these days for visual artists, photographers, and writers who want their work seen and read, but not used and abused without permission.
Here is what we know about Ian Delaney Doherty, and his work speaks for itself in the slideshow.
What we have here is a powerhouse of modern artistic photography right in the hood.

Country of Origin: USA / Ireland
Statement or Goal:
In one sense you could say that I want to make the world a better place but I do not know how... So I take pictures as I go. I hope that when people look at them they feel good and from this more goodness in the world will follow. In another sense you could say that I realize art has a limit in terms of it's purpose. In the very long term mankind stands no chance for survival if we are unable to find a way off this planet. If I had my life to do over I would devote my life to science. Given that it is probably too late for me to make a meaningful contribution to this end; it is my wish that a scientist someday taking a break from a set of complex equations will look at a piece of art I have done. Then have a new thought, one which otherwise would not have occurred, which will lead to a new line of thinking and perhaps help to solve some of the complex problems humanity faces. My work regularly appears in art galleries of the DC metropolitan area.
