An Iams food recall is the latest dog and cat food recall over fears of potential contamination with Salmonella, the Dayton Daily News reported on Aug. 15.
The Iams food recall is for dry dog food and cat food sold under the brand names of Iams and Eukanuba, which are part of the Procter & Gamble company. The Iams food recall was jointly issued by P&G and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration because both animals and their owners are at risk of Salmonella infection from contaminated pet food.
The Iams and Eukanuba pet foods that are potentially contaminated were shipped to multiple retailers around the United States, the FDA said in issuing the Iams food recall.
Numerous types of Iams food and Eukanuba food for dogs and cats are included in the recall, all with “Best By” dates during the first two weeks of November 2014. Check the FDA site or the Iams or Eukanuba websites for the full pet food recall list.
According to the FDA, pets with Salmonella infection may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets may have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, contact your veterinarian.
Pet owners are at risk of Salmonella infection, too, if they handle contaminated dog or cat food or touch any surfaces, such as pet food bowls, exposed to products in the Iams food recall and do not thoroughly wash their hands.
There have been numerous pet food recalls in recent months, including a Natura pet food recall that came on the heels of a previous Natura pet food recall.
