I see London, I see France: Michelle Obama is fashion forward on European trip

Paris, Fashion
You don't see a lot of polar fleece on the streets of Paris. Sue Frause photo.

The foreign press, particularly the London and Paris varieties, are having a field day with First Lady Michelle Obama's debut in England and the continent. And well they should. Although past administrations have included First Ladys who were usually garbed and coiffed in a White House manner, Michelle Obama is reminiscent of those Camelot days when Jacqueline Kennedy held court.

Although the Obamas won't be in Paris long enough to soak up some of that wonderful city's culture and cool, I'm sure Michelle will make a return visit and spend more time with Carla Bruni, wife of French President Nicolas Sarkowsy.

If there's one city in the world where it's fun to check out who's wearin' what, that would be Paris. I am by no means a fashionista, or even a semi-slave to fashion, but after a week in Paris I vowed to never again hit the streets without being accompanied by some sort of stylish scarf.

For fun and free entertainment, attend a fasion show at Au Printemps de la Mode, one of Paris' popular department stores. They hold them every Tuesday at 10 AM on the seventh floor -- and they're free. No reservations needed.

Another fabulous Parisian department store, Galeries Layfayette, holds fashion shows on Fridays at 3 PM in the Salon Opera on the seventh floor. The weekly shows are also free, just email them a month in advance: welcome@gallerieslafayette.com.

And don't miss Galeries Lafayette's on site Champagne bar. Bathed in pink and looking like Barbie’s personal cocktail lounge, it's a stylish place to sip Champagne and snack on complimentary munchies.

Any picture of real Paris life. I only see tourist thing, where are busy streets, ethnic diversity, graffity... big city life ?
I understand why people have a false view of Paris if journalists show cliches that are not even real for 99% of inhabitants.

Point well taken. This was a piece about Paris fashion, so I selected the photos to reflect that ... I have been to Paris numerous times and have taken hundreds of photos. The ten I selected matched the story. I don't think people have a false view of Paris ... it's a beautiful city and with that go all the big city cliches of crime, graffiti, etc. At some point I'm sure I'll address that, too. Thanks for your comment. Merci!
