You really need more than 100 and about 500+ networkers in LinkedIn to develop a representative sample of the types of professionals that you may need to connect with to develop your job search. Over 83% of all jobs are found via Linked in. Take these instructions and get started:
a. For new LinkedIn users, increase the number of people with whom you are linked to in the following ways:
i. As you enter your e-mail address in your profile summary, state “invites welcome”.
ii. Increase your connections by searching LinkedIn as an open networker in LIONS status. Add LION next to your last name in your profile. This will let networkers know that you are open to receive invitations to link professionally. (LION stands for LinkedIn open networker)
iii. Go to LinkedIn slash signal to see real time updates.
iv. Find worthwhile groups to join by clicking on the Groups Directory in the Groups Menu. Type your “industry specific keyword” such as hospitality or banking and join related groups. After joining, you are able to participate in discussions, share links of interests, comment on others’ posts and develop connections.
3. How about your Twitter contacts? Are you following top companies of interest and searching for jobs?
a. For new Twitter users, develop your professional network in the following ways:
i. Set up your handle as your 1st name and last name at twitter dot com.
ii. Search for related industry via the search tool. Click “follow” when you locate your industry or company of interest.
iii. Look for specific jobs by typing “name of city” and “jobs”.
