There are only twenty-eight days in the short month of February. It is probably the dreariest month of the year
and it may be one of the slowest months of business unless you’re in the greeting card industry. So why not
juice it up with a bunch of meaningless holidays to make the time go by faster?
February 1 is National Freedom Day; February 2 is the big one. Groundhog Day and the Super Bowl.
February 3rd is The Day the Music Died Day commemorating the untimely death of singers Buddy Holly,
Richie Valens and the Big Bopper. They perished in a tragic plane crash on February 3, 1959. Every
generation has their music icons. These three were among the top of the 1950's generation. Those who grew
up in the fifties mourned their deaths.. Memorials have occurred for years.
The sports don’t stop there, February 7 the Winter Olympics begin. February 8 is Boy Scouts Day and
February 10 is one of my favorites, Umbrella Day. Nothing like a nice sturdy umbrella to ward off a February
snowstorm. Celebrate National Lost Penny Day on February 12 and the 14th is not only Valentine’s Day, but
also National Ferris Wheel Day. On February 20 people go out at noon into the freezing cold, wave their
hands over their heads and chant "Hoodie-Hoo". That’s right it’s National Hoodie-Hoo Day! It is a day to
chase away winter blahs, and bring in spring. After all, everyone is sick and tired of winter at this point and a
little crazy being cooped up inside all winter and not seeing the sun.
There is National Tortilla Chip Day followed by National Chili Day on February 25. Coincidence? I think not.
February 20 is Love Your Pet Day and the 26th is Tell a Fairy Tale Day. I like that one but I always have a
hard time finding a fairy to tell a tale to. I hate to let a holiday like that go by. I think somewhere during the
month there is a 60 % chance that there is National Weatherman Day.
But February 21 is my hands-down favorite holiday of the month. That’s right, you guessed it. I am talking
about National Sticky Buns Day. This one is not about sitting in gum, it’s an actual holiday, and I am not
making it up. Check out the slideshow and video to see how I celebrate February holidays.
1 ½ Sticks Butter
1/3 Cup Brown Sugar
½ Cups Pecans, Chopped
1 Pkg. Puff Pastry
2 Tbs. Butter, Melted
2/3 Cup Light brown Sugar
3 Tbs. Cinnamon
1 Cup Raisins
Preheat oven to 400 degrees
In a food processor, combine the 1 ½ sticks butter, brown sugar and pecans. Pulse until nuts are coarsely chopped.
Transfer to a bowl and mix in raisins and cinnamon and combine.
On a floured surface, roll pastry dough. Butter the sheet with a brush and dab mixture evenly across the entire
sheet. Roll the pastry up snugly finished with the seam side down. Cut the roll into equal sections measuring
about 1 ½ inches. Place on a greased cookie sheet and bake for 20 minutes or until buns are golden brown.
Cool before serving.
So whether you are celebrating umbrellas or your pet, a lost penny or chili and tortillas, have a happy
February everybody, and don’t forget the day the music died.
